Managed Linux Desktops
Rise of the Linux desktop
Only recently has the advance of Linux in the server market been matched by a corresponding advance in the desktop market, such has been the dominance of a single monolithic proprietary software company and the misconception that the software provided by this company is somehow 'standard'.
However, Linux now has everything needed to compete on the desktop, as evidenced by recent large scale migrations to the Linux desktop around the world - IBM, the city of Munich and the Spanish regional government of Extremadura are just three large organisations who have migrated or are in the process of migrating to Linux.
A healthier market
This is much healthier for the market than the hitherto virtual monopoly by a single company, and it will be healthier still when the Apple iWork solution for the MAC arrives - a wider choice for end users generally means that all the providers have to try harder.
Almost all the well-known Linux distributions provide desktops now, some developed by themselves and some more general ones, such as the GNOME or KDE offerings. And most Linux desktops come with a host of office productivity and other useful tools as standard.
